Applying geochemical and colour properties to quantify sediment sources in a Brazilian semiarid ephemeral river system

چکیده
• The Brazilian semiarid is the most densely populated dry region in world. Sediment source apportionment was quantified a ephemeral catchment. combination of conventional and alternative tracers improved discrimination. Our results may gain high visibility given climate change projections for regions. Although underline need creation integrated strategies to protect water resources semiarid, sediment data remain scant this environment. Accordingly, we evaluated contributions one relevant catchments by combining geochemical colour tracer properties. In doing so, explored applicability as low-cost use time-consuming costly properties, such tracers. Two classification schemes were used based on environmentally contrasting regions within catchment (upper, middle lower parts) land (Caatinga biome - natural vegetation, unpaved roads, channel banks). Suspended sediments (SS) bed (BS) target sediment. A total 660 individual material samples collected composited. Geochemical measured potential fingerprints discriminate quantify contributions. provided weak discrimination use. However, final outputs. Using MixSIAR model, contributed more than other regional sources. Caatinga (SS = 49 %; BS 47 %) banks 35 39 %). Overall, our suggest that recovery conservation vegetation stabilization banks, especially part, are critical improving supply control study basin. More studies needed evaluate conservative behaviour rivers.

Sources and distribution of hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) in Japanese river sediment.
The distribution of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) in the sediment of three Japanese rivers with different characteristics (i.e., population and potential source in the catchment) was investigated and compared with the results estimated using a multimedia fate model (ChemCAN). High concentrations of HBCD in sediments in the range of 134-2060 ng g(-1) were found in a river receiving textile waste...
متن کاملTracing suspended sediment sources in catchments and river systems.
Recent years have seen a growing awareness of the wider environmental significance of the suspended sediment loads transported by rivers and streams. This includes the importance of fine sediment in the transport of nutrients and contaminants, including phosphorus (P). Sediment source exerts a key control on the physical and geochemical properties of suspended sediment, including its P content,...
متن کاملThe use of fine sediment fractal dimensions and colour to determine sediment sources in a small watershed
As many particle-associated contaminants and nutrients are supply controlled, the question of particle source is crucial. In addition, sediment storage has important implications for the delivery and fate of pollutants. Increased accumulations of fine sediment ( < 63 Am) in gravel beds not only modify benthic habitat but also increase the retention time of sediment-associated contaminants in th...
